Arboricultural Impact Assessment Statements
Many building and construction sites have existing mature trees on them, these are at risk of being damaged, in various ways, during the build. This can be physical damage, for example, machinery damaging root systems, trunks and limbs. Alternatively, it can be less obvious damage through more passive activities such as the inappropriate storage of materials that causes ground compaction, which in turn affects a tree's root system.
Most local authority planning departments now request that a report, or assessment, is prepared to accompany planning applications describing the potential impact of construction works, the resulting development and ongoing use of the site will have upon the trees to be retained. The assessment will also need to take into account changes in ground levels, paving, roads, drainage and also the impact the trees will have themselves. This might include roots affecting walls and pathways, shading and subsidence.
The assessment will need to include recommendations and advice that will reduce or remove the impact of the development upon the trees.
